Mr. Gareth Higgins graduated in Medicine from University College Cork in 1998. After graduation he gained a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) for his research thesis on "Light, Oxidation and the Retinal Pigment Epithelium in the Pathogenesis of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)" (University College Cork). He then trained in St Paul's Eye Unit, Liverpool as an Ophthalmic Surgeon. He pursued subspecialty training in Oculoplastic Surgery in Liverpool, followed by a fellowship in Corneal, Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Perth, Western Australia.
His areas of interest include General Ophthalmology, Oculoplastics, Corneal disease and Cataract Surgery and he has published many peer-reviewed research papers and co-authored a book chapter on Herpetic Eye Disease. He was a grant recipient from Fighting Blindness for his research thesis on AMD and has won prizes for his research presentations. His surgical expertise includes management of periocular skin cancer, complex eyelid and periocular reconstruction, ptosis, ectropion and entropion surgery, glaucoma surgery and corneal transplantation in addition to cataract surgery.
Mr. Higgins is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at University College Cork.
